Title: U. S. 41
Post by: Milt on February 24, 2013, 03:50:46 PM
U. S. Highway 41 runs from Copper Harbor, Michigan to Miami, Florida.  For twenty years, I operated a business on an early alignment of the highway.  It ceased to be U. S. 41 in 1941,  when it became Georgia 3.  After about sixty years, Georgia 3 was rerouted and it is now Atlanta Road in Smyrna, Cobb County.  A woman who lived next door to my store (in her husband's childhood home) from 1935 until just a few years ago told me about how much traffic there was when this two lane road was U. S. 41.  She spoke of sometimes waiting a half hour or more to pull out of her driveway.  Eventually, someone would let her in.  In 1941, the four lane bypass was completed in Cobb County - diverting traffic around Marietta and Smyrna.

Very interesting. What town was your business in, Smyrna? Do you have any old photos of the town?
